Preparation for Natural Disasters
What to do in an Earthquake !!
Lynn Heatley, R.N., Emergency Services Consultant
May I recommend a few things that could be very important and possibly life saving in the event that we might experience a major earthquake sometime in our lifetime. Here is a quick link that is a fun quiz that tests our "readiness" of what to do in an earthquake. It takes about a minute to do and has a great list of resources at the end:
http://www.nwcn.com/sharedcontent/features/flash/quake/during.html
Also, here is a wonderful 40 page handbook (in pdf form) that I would recommend you to print out (or at least save it on your computer), it is extremely valuable and would help you walk through things after an earthquake.
http://lafd.org/eqbook.pdf
Also, here is another good resource of helping people through the emotional crisis of disaster:
http://www.hillcrestinsurance.com/Surviving%20Stress%20in%20the%20Storm.pdf
Praying you are doing well and that the Lord will grant us wisdom and protection if disasters do occur and that the Lord would help us to shine for Him, whether it is in the midst of a storm or in the place of peace.
Here to serve you . . .

On Monday, the City of Escondido, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs will open a clearance shop, the Rebuild Escondido Assistance Center. It will link volunteers and donations of services with families recovering from the fires. The city helped set up telephone and wireless Internet service, but the center will be run by the community groups. They will try to fill in the gaps left by public agencies helping families who have lost everything and will also assist those who need a helping hand. The idea is that the private groups – from churches and temples to school groups – can avoid duplicating one another's efforts if they work together. Groups including the Escondido Charitable Foundation, the San Diego Community Foundation and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido also are participating. In addition to Escondido residents, the center will help those in unincorporated county areas outside the city, such as Del Dios and the Via Loma Vista neighborhood, which were heavily damaged by the fires. Jerry Van Leeuwen is Escondido's director of community services.

Blog used for Emergency Information Dispersement for So. California

This blogsite is being used as a "bulletin board" for emergency needs when they arise. In this way, there can be a quick dispersing of information and access to that information. In the midst of seasons of calmness, it will be less active. Check back as often as you like.

President Bush Announces Day of Prayer - Sept 16
Bush Announces Prayer Day
Published on 8 September 2005 in Prayer Mobilization
Source: Fox News
President Bush on Thursday sought to assure victims of Hurricane Katrina (search) that his administration was working around the clock to meet their needs, and asked Americans across the country to pray for the effort.
"I've declared Friday, Sept. 16, a national day of prayer and remembrance," Bush said in a televised afternoon address. "I ask that we pray as Americans have always prayed in times of trial, with hope for a better future and with the humility to ask God to keep us strong so we can better serve our brothers and sisters in need."
Here are some prayer points posted by the Christian Emergency Network (www.centoday.com)
PRAYER POINTS
As people begin to come back into their devastated properties on the Gulf Coast for the first time, pray that they would seek the Lord for strength and help to rebuild their lives.
Pray for great wisdom for officials who now have to deal with the “sludge” and toxic remnants.
The Port of New Orleans, shut down for more than two weeks because of Hurricane Katrina, is slowly resuming operations. Pray that recovery in this 5th largest port in the U.S. would go better than anticipated.
Pray for the resettlement efforts in cities all across our country. Pray that those being resettled would hear a clear Gospel message and come to saving faith in Christ.
It is now estimated that over 370,000 school children have been displaced from classrooms in Louisiana and Mississippi. Pray for peace for these children as they adjust to new surroundings. Pray for the teachers, and administrators who will have these displaced children in their classrooms, adding additional stress.
As the water levels go down, and yet more bodies are found, pray for physical and emotional safety for those dealing with this grim task.
Pray that as the “flaws in the system” are looked at, that wisdom would prevail, and not rhetoric that further divides our country.
Continue to pray for strength for relief workers, for police and fire personnel as they work long grueling hours.
Pray for strength, vision and endurance for relief agencies. The short term relief is ramping us, but this disaster requires long-term commitment and persistence.
Pray for the Churches and agencies in the devastated areas to come together in unity, and to have a new vision for the rebuilding of the affected areas; and that Churches be able to work together in mutual esteem, humility, and unity to minister to those in need.
Pray that stories of God’s love, protection and grace would touch many hearts as they are told through the media. (Prayer points from Christian Emergency Network, www.centoday.com)

Final Accurate Update on Relief Efforts in the Inland Empire
Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005 - FINAL Update
Dear Friends~
I want to update you with the most accurate information as to what the Inland Valley area of San Bernardino County is doing towards the Hurricane Relief Effort. Some of the information that I have provided on previous emails has not been accurate, thus I will refer you to the facts below that were gained from the Training Meeting that occurred last night. Please fwd this on to others who might have received a prior email from me. Thanks.
There are several organizations / ministries that are doing a great work in stepping in to assist in the Relief effort.
1. AMERICAN RED CROSS - INLAND VALLEY CHAPTER
209 East "I" Street
Ontario, CA 91764
(909) 986-6651
web: www.inlandvalleyredcross.org
If you have extra time and want to volunteer at your local American Red Cross, go to their website at: http://www.redcross.org and put in your zip code, this will then take you to the information about the chapter within your region and you can then contact your local chapter and find out about areas you can serve in.
2. OPERATION HOMECOMING
Loveland Church
16888 Baseline
Fontana, CA 92336
Office (800) 974-9147
Loveland Church in Fontana has stepped into a major role of support through the organization called "Operation Homecoming". Their vision is to help the evacuees that are coming into the Southland (including those coming into the Inland Valley region) to find housing, to provide for their practical needs and to bring the love and comfort of God. They will be used in assisting with long term needs (whereas the Red Cross is involved with immediate needs). Operation Homecoming has many needs: 1)People to provide housing (a process of screening and training will happen for those who are opening up their homes 2) Items/appliances/furniture for these homes 3) New clothing 4) Financial Donations. You can contact Greg and Valerie Johnson (the coordinators of this ministry) at the number above. They also are putting together a website at: www.operationhomecomingusa.org but it is not fully functional at this time. Greg's email is: wisemenlovegod@yahoo.com if you have resources to offer.
3. KIDCARE INTERNATIONAL
Drop Off Center at CBM Systems
1599 Monte Vista Ave.
Claremont, CA
(909) 624-6101
www.kidcare.org
This organization is receiving NEW items of clothing, blankets and non-perishable food items that will be sent to the Gulf Coast Region. Whereas Operation Homecoming (listed above) is mostly receiving items for evacuees coming into the Southland, Kidcare is receiving items to send out. Call their office or visit their website for more information, to understand what their present needs are and to find out what the best time is to drop off supplies.
4. PRAYER
It has been an experience to try and step into trying to communicate (often with partial or inaccurate facts, my deepest apologies) regarding meeting the needs of those affected by this national crisis. If you do not feel led to do anything above, I would ask that you please pray for the following needs:
1) That the love of Christ will be revealed in attitude and action to all those who have been affected by this crisis.
2) For strength, comfort and encouragement to those who have stepped into the crisis to give aid or relief.
3) For strengthening of the Disaster Relief Systems, both nationally and locally, for the many organizations to be led by God in the revising and strengthening of existing structures so that the overall system can be improved upon for the present crisis and those to come.
4) For the glory of God, salvation of men and hope to arise in these seasons of crisis and rebuilding.
Well friends, thank you for all that you have done in trying to communicate the need outward and also in stepping in to meet the need. It is my hope that this communication will assist in providing you with more accurate details of how you can be involved; please contact the organizations above for direct questions. If there are other details that I think might be helpful, I will post them on my web / blog site. You can check this site as desired: www.prayercommandpost.blogspot.com
May the Lord bless you and keep you in His perfect peace as you love and serve Him daily.
Together for His glory,
Lynn Heatley
